In 1972 three local men's teams were joined by a German team and two others from
British Columbia, Canada for the first international competition that was to become
the California Cup. That first tournament was planned in a few hours by two or three
people. Today the California Cup Organizing Committee begins planning next year’s
tournament the day after the medals have been awarded. The Committee works year
round to find ways to maintain and improve the event. California Cup is now the
premier Club Tournament in North America.
Thirty-seven years later, California Cup has grown to a field of over 140 teams
playing in thirteen divisions over 4 days. Competition is held for nearly two thousand
athletes, some as young as five and seniors who are of still unconfirmed ages.
Teams from Canada, Mexico and Taiwan are regular competitors in multiple
divisions. They have since been joined by teams from Armenia, Argentina, Australia,
England, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Malaysia, Moldavia, Netherlands, Nigeria, and
Russia featuring many Olympic & World Cup players.
In 2007 the Field Hockey Federation replaced their artificial turf pitch on the campus
of Moorpark College, the traditional site of the California Cup. This new venue is the
showcase of hockey in a tournament played on twelve fields during the weekend
proceeding the last Monday in May. Super Division games begin Friday morning and
the tournament conclude at approximately 4:00pm on Monday followed by the
awards ceremony. The Champions of the Men’s & Women's Super Divisions vie for a
$5,000 top prize. Furthermore, all the players on the top three teams in all divisions
receive handsome gold, silver, or bronze medals.
A commercial center established in the main tent on the event grounds offer vendors
a covered area from which they offer a variety of sports equipment, refreshments and
snacks as well as professional photographers to catch the players, young and old in
action.
Come join us and experience the tournament for yourself. You will be glad you did!
